Gout is a type of arthritis which mainly affects the big toe, and sometimes joints such as the ankles, knees, wrists, fingers, and elbows. Gout results in a painful, red, swollen area which is extremely painful to touch. It is caused by a build-up of uric acid which the body can’t metabolise and excrete.
Recommended nutrients:
• Diuretic herbs should be used in order to flush the body of excess uric acid without losing valuable minerals such as potassium. Herbs which have a diuretic effect include: dandelion leaf tea, or celery seed.
• Include alkalinising foods in your diet such as barley grass, cherry juice, or apple cider vinegar
Other tips and ideas:
• Cut out foods which contain a high level of purines from the diet, as they are metabolised into uric acid. Foods which contain the highest levels of purines include: seafood – sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and organ meats such as kidneys, liver, brain, sweetbreads.
• Avoid alcohol, as it can be a contributing factor towards Gout.
• Consume 8-10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day in order to encourage an alkaline state in the body.
• Drink 1.5 – 2 litres of water per day, as this will help to dilute excess uric acid for excretion.
• Keep a healthy weight and limit calorie intake, as gout has a higher incidence in those who are overweight.
