Ear Health Tinnitus Tinnitus is characterised by a constant ringing or buzzing in the ears. It is often related to a disorder of the inner or middle ear which can be caused by a variety of factors such as exposure to loud noise, nerve degeneration, Menieres disease, degeneration of the small bones in the inner ear, or nutritional deficiencies. Recommended nutrients: • Ginkgo biloba increases blood circulation to the extremities, and has a good success rate for treating tinnitus. • Bio-ear drops can be used in the ears and contain ingredients which can help to relieve tinnitus. • CoQ10 increases blood circulation in the capillaries of the ear, bringing with it nutrients and oxygen. • Vitamin B12 can be used for the reparation of nerves which are damaged. Other tips and hints: • Include foods in your diet which increase blood circulation such as cayenne, ginger, cinnamon, horseradish, and black pepper. • Try Acupuncture at the Health Zone Clinic for treating tinnitus. • Avoid loud noise as much as possible. Ear infections An inner ear infection is often bacterial in origin, and results in pain, inflammation, itchiness, discharge from the ears, and swelling. Recommended nutrients: • Take vitamins and minerals which boost the immune system such as Zinc, Vitamin C or Selenium. • Garlic when taken raw, acts as a natural anti-biotic. • Echinacea, Elderberry or Olive leaf are great for boosting the immune system and help to prevent and shorten the duration of infections. • Colloidal silver has anti-bacterial properties and can be used both used as an ear wash and taken internally. • If you are prone to ear infections, ear candling can be helpful for preventing ear infections as it removes waxy build-up. • Bio-ear eardrops can be used for both prevention and treatment of infection. • Cod liver contains Vitamins A and D which are protective for the mucous membranes of the body. Other tips and hints: • Try adding one teaspoon of Manuka honey to warm water with a squeeze of lemon, and some grated ginger. Manuka honey has wonderful anti-bacterial properties. • Avoid dairy foods and sugar, as they are mucous forming, and sugar suppresses the immune system. • Keep the ears warm and dry. • Food allergies can be a factor in persistent ear infections. Allergy testing at the Health Zone Clinic can help. • Try an Essential oil inhalation to help clear out the airways using eucalyptus. Fill a bowl with hot water, add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil, place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl. Inhale the vapour for five to ten minutes and do this a few times a day.
